Box Office Triumph
Singam Again crashed in ₹43.50 crore net (₹57.50 crore gross) in India on day one, and this is now biggest first day performance ever for Ajay Devgn, beating his own record. That is greater than the previous report of ₹32.09 crore, set by Singham Returns in 2014. Singham Again continued its box office domination, having copped around 60% of the screens and buzzing high occupancy in key centres including Mumbai and Ahmedabad, eclipsing its festive rival Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 which opened with ₹35.5 crore. While this Diwali clash has satisfied varied viewer palates — with Shetty providing a full-on drama for his fans, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 gives the audience a less-serious, comedy-in-horror outlet insteads.
Critical Reactions and Audience Reception
Reviews have been scattered between praise and critique, succoured by a mixture of critics. While the film’s action sequences and chemistry of the ensemble cast has been appreciated, some have commented about the screenplay being incoherent, especially in the first half. But, the second half has everything and is a brilliant, fast-paced experience with action sequences that makes this movie worth watching for anyone who likes up a classic Bollywood action movie.
However, Singam Again takes from the Ramayana with Ajay Devgn’s character stepping up as the Ram to Arjun Kapoor’s villain, namely Danger Lanka. While a twist on the mythological side was a creative choice, there were some critics who thought it detracted just a little from the narrational flow of the book. Also, many attributed the screenplay, with contributions from multiple writers, inconsistent, with a chaotic first half compared to the greater half.
Standout Performances
Ajay Devgn, as always, wears the weight of Bajirao Singham well on his shoulders, but this time around, he apparently is a more stoic version of the usually stubborn Singham breaking the ground with his fiery performances in the earlier films. The supporting ensemble is lively, with Ranveer Singh returning as Simmba proving especially amusing. Visuals and Direction
Singham Again reflects Rohit Shetty’s flamboyant and grand-style direction and has received compliments for the film’s captivating visuals with much of it shot in Kashmir, contrasting the cinematic touch with VFX-driven action movies. If the high-rises and the fields were a flavour we were happy to taste again, the beaches and the city and the snow-covered hills add a new voice-over context to a writer-director who makes an art out of marrying poppy visuals and crash-bang action.
Conclusion
With outrageous action sequences, stardom a-plenty, and iconic crossovers, Singam Again is everything we expect from a quintessential Rohit Shetty action extravaganza. Although the narrative has some holes towards the end of the film, the film is still a hit with fans as seen with its box office gross. It caters to Shetty’s loyal fan base who love his trademark stuff with adrenaline-driven action and racy stunts. Singham Again kicks off the festive season with a bang on opening day numbers and buzz of its massy ensemble, proving the everlasting charm of the cop universe of Bollywood.
