Kentucky, 1950s — In the backwoods of Kentucky, rumoured to be not far from Elkhorn there lived two twin brothers (both identical in looks even down to their desire for boyish pranks ) they were called Gumbo and Darby……CASUSALETERROR…. The creepy Hilliker brothers, who resided with their mother- Bertha-at the rundown property were notorious for terrorizing nearby residents and getting into various forms of trouble with the law. Fearing them as unpredictable and dangerous, the locals hated resented them so.

The Early Years of Trouble
Gumbo and Darby were a pair of troublemakers who were always being thrown in jail for their antics throughout the tiny town in Kentucky. Rusty iron gates creaked a macabre welcome, hanging distorted as though worn with the burdens wrought by time on their genealogy-wearied shoulders. They only have their mother, Little Bertha. Although she was viewed as a sweet, gentle lady her sons were the scourge of Chicago.
A Doctor’s Visit Turns Deadly
Little Bertha became extremely sick in 1956. The brother’s once wild behaviors camouflaged the fact that they were both very attached to her. They feared the worst and sent for a local quack named Russell Sprout (of whom more later) in the hope he could do something. The very respected Dr. Russell was accompanying his visits to their home, to help them out… But soon, a fateful tragedy struck her family – Bertha died of an illness within minutes.
The loss of her life brought upon something evil with the brothers With shock and sadness in their eyes, anger boiled within them. They claimed, Russell did something to injured their mother and he was responsible for her death. The twins had refused to listen in spite of his assurances that Bertha was beyond help. They circled the doctor, chanting: “You hurt Mama.”
The Basement Horror
Russell got grabbed and the brothers dragged him down into the basement before he knew what was happening. Thus, it was there that the bitterness of the twins came through entirely. His horror turned to alarm when he found townspeople who had vanished during the previous months locked up in the basement. There was no more doubt that this Gumbo and Darby had been stealing up the locals, as well- another foul in a whole list of them.
In the dingy obscurity of his prison Russell lived day by day, his will to get away diminished as time slipped by. Until the brothers offered something more sinister. They needed a volunteer to carry their mothers’ body out of the house and into the backyard. It was his one change, Russell thought; his way of getting out.
A Desperate Attempt to Escape
Russell’s heart pounded with fear and desperation as they led him upstairs. He fled out the front door to the top of the stairs. But when he finally got there, the door was hammered closed. He then started hearing the footsteps of the brothers behind him, preceding his moment of panic. As they spoke terrible in unison, “Mom is back to see you.
The Final Moments
Where Russell Sprout and other prisoners ended up in the basement is unknown. Mystery, as their property would become a legend, the people in town hearing about it and being afraid to ask anyone else about it. With Gumbo and Darby retired from their reign of terror they had become some of the most infamous figures in history as far as Kentucky lore went, dubbed the evil twins who brought darkness to the hills of Kentucky.
