Promising beginning: the birth of Podemos

On December 14, 1983 in Madrid was born this political scientist called Íñigo Errejón. Trained in political science, he made a rapid career for himself as one of the founding figures behind Podemos, the leftwing party that originated out of frustration at Spain’s traditional parties. His strategy and his communications nous had been responsible for a surge by the party in 2014, but also its general election performance that year. Errejón, who helped steer Podemos through its policy and strategic direction, was one of the key engineers of Spain’s political left in a new era.

Nevertheless, Errejón´s passage through Podemos did not lack difficulties. The party quickly gained support from wide swaths of progressive voters, but internal divisions began to emerge. Over time these disagreements between Errejón and party leader Pablo Iglesias because more pronounced, since they focused on the future direction of Podemos as well as his tone. Errejón representing a more moderate, institutionally driven approach and Iglesias favoring confrontation. Those divergences are what culminated in a political break this past January.

A Split and the Birth of Más País

In 2019 Errejón broke off from Podemos to launch his own political platform, Más Madrid, targeting local elections in the city of Madrid. An alternative leftist platform that became Más País in which the green twist, feminist and social justice were highlighted. Errejón framed Más País as an alternative that could reach beyond the two sides of Spain: the traditional left and progressive, urban persona to approach unite environmental interests and political reform.

He could return to the Congress of Deputies later that year automatically, and this moment marked a hugely poltical turning point in his career. Más País, while failing to replicate the breakthrough success of Podemos in its honeymoon days, kept Errejón a high-profile figure who undeniably used his candidacy as key catalyst for national conversations about climate change, and feminist or workers rights.

Politics versus the Personal

So as much of Errejón’s political appeal was about his ideas and how closely he shared them with the traditional left, there were also moments when his private life became entangled in public interest. In the years before Podemos launched, he lived with fellow politician Rita Maestre from 2008 to 2014; they were a high-profile couple who had met as young political activists. After they broke up, Errejón had a relationship with journalist Glòria Mena and subsequently with the member of left-wing CUP (Candidatura de Unidad Popular) Mireia Vehí. Though the Spanish media had a field day about his privacy, Errejón led a mostly low-key private life.

Nevertheless, in recent months the target of controversy became Errejón himself. The young man was hit with anonymous accusations of psychological abuse on social media, but also in relation to inappropriate behavior toward women. These charges against Errejón were particularly defamatory since the leader has a history of defending women’s rights. It spiralled out of control and he resigned saying his public life did not work with private. He has signalled his departure stating “I had come to the end of my spirit in conflict with myself.”

Resignation and Its Fallout

Íñigo Errejón resigning on October 24, 2024 is not only a turning point in his professional future but also for the whole of ‘Podemos’ (the far-left political party) or broader Spanish left. In a statement, his party Sumar said it would respect the decision and added that its commitment to feminist values meant an internal investigation of Mr Gunnlaugsson’s actions would be launched. The gravity of the situation was demonstrated by a statement on gender-based violence, which elicited expressions of solidarity with the victims from all political parties in Spain.

Errejón said in his last public appearance that the accusations and political life had imposed a cost on him of pressure, pain in various parts of the body. His exit involves an accounting to both the private and professional, proof that even in Spanish politics his rise was far from straightforward.

The Legacy of Íñigo Errejón

Errejón leaves a mixed legacy of success and infamy. The political movement that he helped take to the heights of Spanish politics, Podemos (We Can), shook up domestic left/right positions on austerity, inequality and political corruption. In his most recent work within Más País, this has led him to think about how Spain might be greener and more socially just. Yet his legacy is being called into question, for the former governor has resigned over accusations of harassment.

As Errejón goes off-stage, a new scenario opens up for the leftist ecosystem in Spain given that one of its most brilliant and at once contested characters leaves. If Errejón will re-emerge from his exile in public life is something still be determined. Nonetheless, his influence on the progressive politics of Spain could be long-lasting.
