In the latest episode, Mumbai-based model and actress Kadambari Jethwani has made allegations about two IPS officers who were earlier part of the Vijayawada Police Commissionerate for allegedly harassing her family. Jethwani claimed this was being done at the behest of the leaders of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP). The Ibrahimpatnam police filed a false case on her and all family members, including the 76-year-old father, whom she claimed with no evidence, even at the start of February 2024.
Sequence of Events
That complaint was filed in February 2024 by YSRC leader Kukkala Vidyasagar, who alleged that Jethwani had committed property theft through document forgery. According to court documents, Jethwani and Vidyasagar were friends until he inappropriately sent pictures of his genitals and made threats.
Two days later, the Jethwanis and her family were reportedly taken into custody illegally from their Mumbai home. Their phones and electronic devices were seized during this operation on that property, achieved through illegal means.
Police Investigation
Following these complaints, DGP Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao ordered NTR district CP SV Rajashekhar Babu to register an online complaint of Jethwani and take action against those who had supposedly misused their capacity. A case was registered at the Ibrahimpatnam police station that CP Rajashekhar Babu handed over to ACP K Sravanthi Roy, who entrusted her with an inquiry and final report in lightning time.
Government Response
Finally, Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha said action would be taken if officers were ragging the students. Then Dikshit declared she would rechristen ‘Disha’ police stations as women’s, which would function similarly.
Inquiry Initiated
However, in a new development, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has ordered a probe into allegations of mistreatment against Jethwani and her family. The inquiry relates to allegations that police personnel were manipulated by YSRC leader Kukkala Vidyasagar, who allegedly cried havoc about real estate fraud being committed by Mr Jethwani and the rest of Nori Babu Rao’s kin.
Torture and illegal detentions
Jethwani has alleged that she and her family were illegally detained in a Vijayawada guest house for three days, where they faced torture. She alleges they were pressured into signing some blank documents and that police warned them of dire consequences in case they refused to cooperate. Jethwani also claims that the police acted based on political connections.
Investigation Details
The case focuses on the acts of several senior IPS officers, namely Kanti Rana and Vishal Gunni, who allegedly orchestrated the gross misconduct. Jethwani claimed the officers assaulted her and physically abused her elderly father.
Background Context
The controversy erupted after Jethwani lodged a rape complaint against a leading industrialist in December 2023. Afterwards, a Police Complaint was allegedly preferred by Vidyasagar against Jethwani. Thereby, the case based on his allegations came to be registered. The Mumbai police, however, dropped the rape case for lack of evidence and because Jethwani did not cooperate.
